Midterms: Grading the Vikings After Eight Games

Quarterbacks: A

What's there to be said about our QB situation? Brett Favre has thrown 16 touchdown passes compared to three interceptions. On top of his stats, Favre has also managed two outstanding comeback drives against San Francisco and Baltimore. Favre has also shown he can handle immense pressure when he played against Green Bay which may, in Favre's mind, couldhave been bigger than a playoff game.

Running backs: B+

Although Adrian Peterson hasn't had his fair share amount of big runs, he's quietly getting the job done. As of today, Adrian is tied for second in the NFL with 784 rushing yards and leads the NFC with nine touchdowns. AD has been hampered with a sore ankle the past three games and should be back to 100% after the bye.

Tight Ends: A-

At the start of last season, Visanthe Shianco looked like a bust as he was dropping balls left and right. Towards the middle of the season, Shianco has apparently found some Stick 'Em and has developed into a top ten tight end in the NFL. With Favre, Shianco has become a red zone threat and has scored all of his six touchdowns inside the 20's. Oh and his six touchdowns? That's good for a tie for second in the NFL.

Wide Receivers: B+

Oh how the receivers have grown. Just last year, Sidney Rice was being labeled as a bust. Not this year. Rice has emerged as one of Favre's favorite targets and has had many game changing moments for the Vikings. Percy Harvin has also showed his big play ability out of the slot. I'd like to see better play from Harvin on deep balls and hopefully Bernard Berrian will come alive for the second half of the season. There is also a few too many drops to earn a higher grade.

Offensive Line: B

Even though two of our five linemen are first year starters, our line has done a great job protecting Favre. The only knock on the grade comes from our run blocking. Even though Adrian is still getting his yards, he's had more and more carries that have been for a loss of yardage or no gain. Expect them to gel and open some holes for All-Day's big gainers.

Defensive Line: A-

Although the run defense isn't as elite as previous seasons, it's still very good but has given up a bit too many big gainers. On the pass rush side and Jared Allen tying calves on a regular basis and Ray Edwards getting his fair share of sacks, the Vikings are a pass rushing force. Just ask Aaron Rodgers...

Linebackers: B-

It's hard to give a higher grade when one of the Vikes' starting linebackers leads the league in missed tackles. The run stopping has been decent as usual but I'd like to see improvement from the 'backers in pass coverage and getting more pressure on blitzes.

Cornerbacks: C+

Even when the Vikings had the services of Antoine Winfield, there were still too many lapses in coverage and missed tackles. Most of the big gains have been given up when the Vikings have the lead in the second half when the Vikings are in their terrible "prevent" defense. Karl Paymah and Benny Sapp have been manageable in replacement of Winfield but it's obvious the pro-bowler needs to come back.

Safetys: C-

I'm not really impressed with the play of the Vikings' safeties. Madieu Williams has been out of place quite often and Tyrell Johnson is still showing his youth and inexperience. There's been some missed tackles and some missed assignments that have went for big gains most noticable Mike Wallace during the Pittsburgh game. Hopefully they can get their act together in the second half

Kicker: A-

Mr. Longwell is having one of his best years in quite some time. By making 13 of 14 field goal attempts (the miss was via block), Longwell is showing that he's still Mr. Consistency. The reason why he didn't earn an "A" is because I'd like to see him get the ball deeper on kickoffs.

Punter: B-

Chris Kluwe is a good punter but he's a bit too inconsistent. When he's trying to pin a team back inside their ten, Kluwe is one of the leagues best. However, it's his long punting that's inconsistent. He can boom one but then he'll turn around and kick one 35 yards on the next attempt. He was expeically terrible early in the game against the Steelers.

Special Teams: A

I could just say the words "Percy" and "Harvin" and you'd know why I gave the Vikings' special teams an "A." I do have to mention that we haven't given up a kick or punt return for a touchdown or too many big gainers thus far.

Coaching: B+

. Childress has really opened up the offense with Favre behind the helm with proof being in the two fourth down tries against the Packers. I would like to see a more aggressive defensive strategy from Leslie Frazier in the second half as it becomes much to relaxed and has lead to leads being blown or almost blown. Long live the bearded Childress!

My take

QB A++ Bretts been light out the best QB we have had in years, to bad Scud Missile isn't paying attention
to a Hall of Famer that has shown that we have had real receivers all along!

OL - C at best. The run blocking is non existent and Sullivan is just to small to play Center, he's getting tossed all the time! Loadholt is now looking to be coming around. McKinnie still can't run block for crap and never gets further up field than maybe 3 or 4 yards. APs #s are way down because his main gap was between Birk and Hutchenson and with Sullivan that hole is non existant!

cornerbacks -D without Winfield and Paymah is just brutal in his lack of coverage skills even when he stays with his man.
C-With Winfield and that also means much better run coverage and teams have ran alot to the rt side since Antoin went down.

Safetie-F they are clearly the weak position on this team and both are constantly caught taking wrong lanes or flat out blowing thier coverages looking for all the world like the Keystone Cops out there. Johnson is young and learning but Madieu Williams is a vet and just blows, missing tackles taking bad angles and losing coverage several times a game!

Coaching- C at best!
Maybe it's the beard or Brett Favre but the Vikings coaching staff has been good this year- Well its not the beard and Coach Ego still has his fair share of questionable decisions a game. Brett has made us forget about the piss poor play calling because he's changing about %50 of the plays sent in at the line!
Defensive coaching is still a mystery as we have pissed away huge leads is 3 games in the 3rd and 4th qtrs this year last week being just the latest and we got lucky as hell against the 49rs and Ravens both games we spit the defensive bit in the 4th qtr!

All in all there is little to bitch about this season so far and this team looks pretty good to get to the playoffs providing Favre'a arm doesn't fall off!
